I have a fondness for Bees!- They are such impactful creatures - vital to the functioning of the human food supply, yet they can be very misunderstood. In 2021 I wrote 'World-Class Pollinator', my first Bee song to raise awareness about their importance, and since then another song had been brewing. I had jotted down a few notes in my phone over the last few years, and this spring I finally sat down with my guitar to round them out and write a new song specifically about Bumblebees and Buzz Pollination. 🎸
I have always wanted to make a marionette puppet, and I thought a Bumble Bee would make a great, joyful character, so this project felt like the perfect opportunity to finally do it!
Here's the music video, starring my Bumblebee Marionette. 🐝 'Buzz Pollination - A Bumble Bee's Song'
It was so interesting to learn about buzz pollination while I was researching bees, and I had a lot of fun crafting my new found knowledge into fun lyrics and a bouncy song.
I wrote the song first, then the music helped inform the design of the bee puppet, as I knew I wanted her to be able to dance and have a playful character to match the song.
I had to do a lot of research into marionette making having never made one before. Figuring out how to make smooth limb joints, string the puppet, and designing the controller were the hardest parts! But it was very rewarding when it all finally came together and I got to operate the puppet and see how she moved!
This was a passion project, just something I felt moved to make. But I hope that it can help in some way to change the negative stigma surrounding these important pollinators, through fun and music. 🎶😊
Here are the chords and lyrics if you want to learn the song and help share the message of the importance of Bees. 🐝💫
Buzz Pollination - A Bumble Bee’s Song
by Tiffany Monk, 2026
Capo 5th - E, A, B7
I’m Fuzzy, I’m buzzy, A little bit clumsy
I’m more bumbly than my cousins who make the honey
But there are certain crops that need a bumblebee’s touch
‘Cuz we’re the only ones who can reach the good stuff
Other pollinators can’t get to the pollen
I’ll tell you all about it, cuz for us it’s common
We do this thing called Buzz Pollination
Our wing muscles beat fast which causes a vibration
Shakes up the pollen in the flower then
It sticks to our bodies and we do it again
We hop from flower to flower, crop to crop
We’ve gotta spread the pollen for the fruit to pop
‘Get sweet nectar from flowers which gives us energy
And the pollen provides protein for a growing bumble bee
It takes a lot to buzz around all day and pollinate the flowers
Helping grow the food with the nutritional powers
I carry lots of weight in my pollen baskets
I’ve got a lot to do on my important task list
To grow fruit trees, vegetables,
Tomatoes on the vine
You need a bit of soil, a bit of rain, and shine
And I’m trying to stay humble
But don’t forget the bumble
You also need the bees like me, we’re part of the jumble
The complex eco system, the circle of life
Put the weed killer away cause it’s causing me strife
I once heard a story about a lemon on a tree
About somebody who saw one and they couldn’t believe it
‘Cuz they’d only seen fruit at the grocery store
Wrapped in plastic, stacked on shelves was all they’d known before
And I’m here to remind you, that nature provides
And there’s a whole world waiting, go and play outside!
